Education Technical Advisor

The Kaizen Company (, an incubator for innovative, scalable solutions that address emerging market challenges and opportunities, seeks a candidate for a short-term, Education Technical Advisor role, in support of the USAID-funded ‘Learning Links Program’ in Liberia. As a part of the ‘Learning Links Program’, the Education Technical Adviser will develop the 2-way SMS platform and data collection system format to enhance tutor-student educational outcomes and facilitate the reenrollment of out-of-school youth back into school. The Education Technical Adviser will also support the training of the project’s partners and staff to effectively manage the platform and data collection system to ensure sustainability. The position requires an innovative individual with a passion to combat global education challenges. Illustrative responsibilities and qualifications for the position are listed below:

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the project’s SMS and voice platform, data analysis tools, and tracking system, focusing on interoperability across Liberia’s mobile network operators (MNOs), ease of use, responsive adaptation, and is built for scale
  • In cooperation with the local partners and community, create or utilize a platform that incorporates the needs of the user and existing digital ecosystem
  • Provide training for project staff and local partners to maximize the effectiveness of the platform
  • Integrate the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) needs of the ‘Learning Links Program’ into the data analysis and tracking system
  • Implement a platform that allows for the addition of mobile money functionality to the SMS platform.

Key Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in information communication technologies for development (ICT4D) or a related field in West Africa or similar contexts, including at least 3 years of demonstrated experience in building and operating SMS platforms, including M&E and mobile money functionality
  • Experience developing and implementing SMS platforms for development projects; experience with USAID is desired.
  • Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem solving skills.
  • Familiarity with Liberia’s education sector and stakeholders is strongly desired; familiarity with the MNOs in Liberia is a plus.
  • Computer skills, including MS Office, SPSS, Access, and Excel
  • Excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills.
  • English fluency, both written and spoken, is required.
